When life gets in the way of your home based business

It’s been a while since I posted on my blogs for the last time… life just got in the way.  First my daughter got very sick, then we had a tragic accident in our community where my neighbors lost their 5 year old son, then my son got sick.

I haven’t had the energy or the mood to write articles or post to my blogs,  I have followed up with customers and distributors by email and processed orders late at night after I’m done “dealing with life” during the day.

Sometimes it’s your day job that gets in the way of your home based business, if you started a business from home, you have an advantage and more flexibility to work around life obstacles than with a regular 9 to 5 job, you just have to set up your priorities.

* Use your email application’s “vacation response” function. If you know you won’t be able to check your emails in a while, set up an autoresponder (most email applications have one) and let your audience know that you received their message and you’ll get back in touch soon.

* Customer service is first. If you have orders pending, emails from customers or distributors, calls to return, those have to be done first. Make the impossible to try to follow up with your customers or distributors in 48 hours or less, preferably in 24 hours.

* If you have the time to get a break, visit your social networking sites and forums. You’ll be able to get a much needed distraction and while you’re there reading about your favorite topics, you can contribute in a thread or two (so you won’t be completely MIA)

* Don’t feel bad. This is one of the reasons you chose to work from home, because you wanted to put  God first, then Family, then Business. Everyone get’s their share of obstacles in life, but you have the flexibility to work on your own schedule.

* As soon as you’re ready get back to work in full power! This is the beauty of working from home.

Great tips, as always! We’ve all been there. I’ve gotten myself in the habit of doing something for my business every day, regardless of what’s going on around me or within me. I may do very little on a “down” day, but I still do something before my head hits the pillow.
